Semester Goal

1. The area or I would like to change or improve is:
Music - Getting better at improv and swing on the drums by at least getting an A- by the end of the semester as my final grade.

2. Pick a primary goal in your lifestyle within the above mentioned Wellness Wheel
area that you want to work on achieving.

Intellectual, Social, Physical, Occupational

3. What health benefits would you receive if you made a change in this area?
With my new style of playing the drum set, I'm bringing in a brand new concept in my mind. I'm open for new ideas and I'm not afraid to stay in my enclosed spot in my brain. It will broaden my intellect and allow me to improve my skills in accepting new things that come at me in life. As for social, knowing how to play the drums better and having more knowledge and ideas about the drumset, I can incorporate those thoughts into everyday conversations I have with people, I could get closer to people who play the drums and they could help me improve. This way I could make new friends and at the same time, have more conversation about the instrument I love. As for physical, for playing jazz music, you really need good hand and feet movement. By getting better at swing drumming, my hands and feet would be able to feel relaxed and not too stressed as I play the drums. Also, if I end up loving swing and shuffle, I could maybe take it up in my future and hopefully get some pay out of it, also getting at least an A- this year will help my gpa broadening my choices of colleges.

4. What difficulties might make achieving this goal a challenge?
Making time for a lot of practice for I have many other things I have to do for school and outside of school such as volleyball, kumon, drum lessons, homework.

5. The people you will ask for support and assistance are:
Mr. Taylor and my drum tutor for they are the people guiding my in my drumming career

In what way will they help you?
They will teach me the basics of swing and jazz drumming and help me build on top of that to make the most out of my skills.

6. Three specific steps involved in making this change/improvement are (be specific)
a.Whenever I don't have JV Volleyball practice or JV Basketball, I will make sure those extra hours will be counted for my jazz drumming at home.

b. In my drum classes, I will request my teacher to teach me the basics of swing.

c. Listen to more jazz music to get the feel of it.

7. How will you record of your progress?
My Jazz band grade will reflect how I'm doing in class and as a Jazz drummer. My goal is at least to get an A- in the class or above.

8. Date you will start / have started:
(4/09/2011)

9. Date you are going to complete:
End of first semester, before winter break

10. Reward for completion (should be appropriate):
A good grade in Jazz band which will help my GPA as it is my lowest grade at the moment.

Self-Esteem Improvement

The 10 Self-Esteem aspects

Try to stop thinking negative thoughts about yourself.

Aim for accomplishments rather than perfection.

View mistakes as learning opportunities.
The mistakes I make now, I don't view them as learning opportunities but I look at them as quizzes at how I'm doing. I always think that the mistakes I do is an overall look at how I am at the thing I made a mistake on. I always ask myself, why I didn't get it right the first time. So now every time I make a mistake, I will make sure I realize what I did wrong and make sure I improve on it.

Try new things.
Usually in my teen years, I avoid trying new things because I want to succeed in the things I already know. This is a bad habit for me as sticking to the things I know will not help me improve or get better at anything. I should learn how to be more open and try out new things and accepting new ideas.

Recognize what you can change and what you can't.

Set goals
Now a days I don't set enough goals for myself to challenge myself and to achieve something. When I do something, I just do it and hope for the best without a goal to achieve. That goal would push me even harder and help me improve whatever I'm trying to. With goals, I can set my boundaries and challenge myself to get better and achieve more and more goals.

Take pride in your opinions and ideas.

Make a contribution.

Exercise!

Have fun.

Health Interview - Mom

What is his/her relationship to you?
She's my mother

1. Have you always been as healthy as you are now? Please explain. Yes, she has always been pretty healthy so far in her life. She avoids eating meat as she's a vegetarian but eats plenty of fruits and vegetables in her diet. Though she does not exercise as much as she'd like to, she's still pretty active and tries to go for a walk 1-2 times a week, but when she was young she was much more active. She's always been able to handle stress very easily and come up with good solutions to overcome obstacles.

2. What particular health habits in the following areas do you practice, that contribute to your level of health?
Nutritional Habits: Vegetarian, eats lots of dairy products, fruits and vegetables and plenty of cheese, soya, tofu and lentils for her proteins in her everyday diet.

Fitness Habits: Not a very regular gym hitter or walker, but still tries her best to go at least 3 times a week.

Coping with Stress: She's able to deal with all the stress on her head easily and doesn't have any major issues as such.
Dealing with Conflicts: She doesn't have very many major problems in this stage of her life, but with the small ones, she's able to come up with good solutions to overcome them.

Keeping a Positive Attitude: She's generally very positive towards almost everything and supports mine and my dad's decisions adding her opinion. She also does not overreact or get hyper over small things, she keeps a positive attitude, which she claims to have a better effect when solving problems.

Any Additional Healthy Habits: When walking short distances, she avoids using the car and usually walks there. She also avoids almost all kinds of fried food to maintain a good and healthy weight. She also does not smoke or drink at all.

3. How did you develop these habits? Please explain.
She has been developing these habits from childhood. Her father was a doctor so she and her brothers were taught about good nutrition and the importance of exercise from her young childhood.

4. What motivates you to practice a healthy lifestyle?
My mom is aware of all the consequences and effects that might happen if she doesn't stay healthy. For example, gaining weight or developing medical conditions like high sugar and cholesterol.

5. Create a question of your own that you would like to ask regarding this person’s healthy lifestyle. Make sure that the question allows your interviewee to expand on his/her thoughts (not a one word answer).

Question: If you were to re-live your childhood, what health aspect would you improve?

Answer: She would have played more active sports because she didn't play much when she was young. She would do this because that is what she feels like she missed in her childhood health aspect. It's not like she didn't play any active sports at all, she did, but not as much as she would have liked to.

Wellness Continuum

My final score on the wellness continuum was a 16/20 where 20 is a perfect score where you're living a perfect and healthy life. A 0 is the lowest score possible when your situation is very bad healthy wise, when your drinking daily, smoking and not caring about yourself at all. I got a score not in the very middle but a bit above three quarters of the whole thing with a score of 16. In the overall conclusion, I'm pretty proud of this because I thought I would get something a bit less because of my eating habits. But it turns out that if I make a few minor changes it could really help out my score on the wellness continuum. I was expecting a score of about 12 or 13 as sometimes I skip meals, don't eat breakfast daily and etc... But now since I got a pretty average score, to go above that I will limit my eating outside, eat breakfast as much as possible whenever possible and finally if I have a choice between eating outside and eating at home, I would preferably choose to eat at home. This is because nutrition had my lowest score and my score could be improved if I make these minor adjustments.
